Each October, New Iberia hosts a competition that is as exciting as it is delicious: The World Championship Gumbo Cook-Off.
At the two-day cook-off, local groups set up kitchens at Bouligny Plaza in downtown New Iberia and vie for the title of “Best Gumbo in the World” in two divisions: amateur and professional. The public is invited to stroll the booths, listen to some great local music and sample the gumbo, which could be anything from traditional chicken and sausage gumbo to more exotic duck, alligator and even rabbit gumbo.
On the second day of competition, the winners are announced and earn official bragging rights until next year. The World Championship Gumbo Cook-Off gives our culture and creativity a chance to truly shine!
